Years ago I heard about oil pulling and I did it for a while but then it was another thing that fell off my radar for a while until I started researching how to get better. Anyone who is close to me knows that I have a love for gut health - as I can talk about it for hours! When I realized how important gut health is to your overall health, I just dug in and learnt as much as possible. But that's for another blog post. Today is about oral health which is just as important!
Like other areas of the body, the mouth is filled with bacteria of which most are harmless. As long as you have a good oral health, you will keep the bacteria under control. However the bacteria can reach levels which can cause oral infections without proper care. Some studies indicate that poor oral health could lead to cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases etc. but more research still needs to be done on this subject. Some medications even reduce the salvia flow which is what washes away the food and neutralizes the acids which is produced by the bacteria in your mouth. But even if it isn't proven (yet), why risk it!?
So besides brushing and flossing what do I do? Every morning I do oil pulling. For some it sounds nasty and for some it takes some getting used to. It is however super easy. I use organic virgin coconut oil and essential oils. I have a jar with the coconut oil in my bathroom so it's easy to access. (If it's solid, it won't take long to melt in your mouth). Use 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil and add 1-2 drops of essential oils. Swish in your mouth for 10-20 minutes first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Make sure you don't swallow and when done spit out in the trash as it can clog up the pipes in your sink. It is to be done gently to not wear out your jaw and cheeks. Finally brush your teeth as normal.
I use Clove and a blend called the Protecting Blend. Clove is antibacterial, anti-viral, antiseptic and anti-fungal and the Protective Blend has oils in it which are also antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral so really great for boosting the immune system and getting rid of harmful bacteria. Clove is a hot oil so don't use more than one drop and don't use it for kids. Other great oils are Wild Orange, Lemon and Peppermint.
Oil pulling helps get rid of toxins in your mouth and creates a clean environment; gets rid of bad breath; boosts the immune system; possibly prevents cavities and much more.
I also make my own mouthwash (Thanks Christine for the recipe) which is so easy to make. I use 1 drop Spearmint, 2 drops of the Protective Blend, 1 drop Peppermint, 1 drop Tangerine per 1 oz of water. Shake the jar well before use and use as regular mouthwash.
Lastly I clean my toothbrush which is also very simple to do. I just soak them in a glass with water, baking soda and a drop of Clove. Easy right :)
It goes without saying that regular dentist visits and a healthy diet also have it's impact on your oral health.
I use certified pure essential oils and these are the only ones I recommend using in my posts. If you want to know more about essential oils or how to buy them, please contact me here.
