I know moving is still 2 months away and we are way past spring for a spring cleaning but I decided to give the kitchen a thorough clean to make it easier for when we will be moving. We do clean the counter tops every day as well as do the dishes, but thorough cleaning such as the inside of fridge and microwave, moving everything on the counter and cleaning down appliances etc is not something I love to do, so I don't do it too often.
I have already tried and tested some handmade cleaners which I have been using for a while but I wanted to try out a few others. As I was finding the ingredients such as white vinegar, baking soda, olive oil, castle soap etc I was thinking how crazy that we go out and buy all these cleaning products which often have chemicals in them, when we have all these products at home already which are great for cleaning.
White vinegar: it's acidic so it can dissolve mineral deposits and it easily cuts through stains and grease. It's great for cleaning stainless steel and glass. It's recommended to always dilute it with water to avoid damaging the surfaces.
Baking soda: it's amazing to get rid of stains and odour!
Essential oils: a lot of essential oils have anti-bacterial and disinfectant so they are great for cleaning products plus they smell nice. Always use glass bottles when using essential oils.
So here's some of the cleaning products I use for the kitchen:
Stainless steel cleaner:
Spray bottle with half white vinegar and half water. Shake and spray on appliances and wipe off with a soft cloth. Follow by wiping over with olive oil to polish and to protect from greasy fingers.
Sprinkle baking soda all over the stovetop.
Add a cloth to warm soapy water and put on top of the baking soda. Leave for 15 minutes and wipe off. Stains and grease come off without any scrubbing.
Yes someone has to do the dishes so at least make it a pleasant experience right ;)
1/4 cup of Castille soap (I use Dr. Bronners unscented)
2 cups of water
20 drops of essential oils of your choice
Great oils to use are: Wild Orange and Lavender; Basil and Grapefruit; OnGuard, Citrus Bliss or Lemon.
This recipe is for a 250ml glass bottle.
All purpose cleaner:
You can easily make your own but I got doTERRA's OnGuard cleaner concentrate for free (contact me if you want to get FREE products too!)
It's just 2 tbsp of concentrate and fill bottle with water and it's ready to go. I love it because it gets rid of grease so easy and who doesn't like when cleaning is easier.
If you want to make your own all purpose cleaner, try out this recipe:
1/4 cup of white vinegar
2 tbsp of baking soda
10-20 drops of essential oils (Lemon, Wild Orange, OnGuard, Tea Tree are all great options)
Add it to a spray bottle and fill the rest up with water. Shake before use.
Finally wash your fruit and veggies! I consider this cleaning too because how many people have touched the apples, lemons etc that you ended up with at home.
Simply put the fruit and vegetables in either a bowl or in the sink and fill it with water and add either a few drops of Lemon or OnGuard essential oils to give them a good clean. Soak for 10-15 min. Then store them as you normally do.
Have fun cleaning!
